Our primary defense will be man-to-man defense.
We will force our opponents to play out of their comfort zones during games.
We will incorporate multiple defenses, including a match-up zone defense.
As a coach, my defensive philosophy has been forged through my experiences with winning programs and the guidance of esteemed mentors. From renowned institutions like UC, Michigan St., Kentucky, and Maryland, I've gleaned invaluable insights into defensive principles.
Under the mentorship of esteemed coaches such as Bill Brewer, Kevin Higgins, and Josh Andrews, I've honed my approach to defense. At Princeton, influenced by Josh Andrews, we embraced an aggressive style, pressing teams relentlessly across the floor. Conversely, at Aiken, where our resources differed, we leaned on defensive fundamentals to compete at the highest level.
I firmly believe that championships are won on the defensive end. Hard work, especially defensively, forms the bedrock of our team's success. While the offense may dazzle, it's our defensive prowess that will propel us to victory. Players who don't commit to intense defensive effort won't see the court—it's that simple.
Our defensive success hinges on a trifecta of hard work, fundamentals, and knowledge. Each player will understand their defensive responsibilities inside and out, with no room for complacency or ignorance. While offenses may falter, our defensive intensity must remain unwavering—after all, effort never takes a day off.
Our defensive strategies will adapt to our personnel and opponents, but one thing remains constant: defense is non-negotiable. It's the cornerstone of our approach to the game, ensuring that regardless of circumstance, our commitment to defense never wavers.
OUR DEFENSIVE PRINCIPLES
General Rule: make offensive players create individually off the dribble (as opposed to out of the offense)
Keep the ball out of the middle: force action to the sidelines and corner
Apply maniacal yet smart ball pressure
SPRINT TO THE BALL: The most important defensive coaching phrase
Throw one hand on every closeout
Instill & Emphasize Communication
Give teams one shot & only one shot; Tinish every play
Avoid unnecessary fouling; foul from the waist down
Make players shoot off the dribble
Make players shoot over us
FORCE ACTION & MAKE THE OFFENSE PLAY UNCOMFORTABLY
